One of the many reasons why I am so excited to have Hernán Luis y Prado on the show this week is because he shows us the true power of having a clear vision.
Hernán had a distinguished 15-year career with the United States Navy during which he completed three combat tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2008 he Founded Workshops for Warriors — the nation’s only accredited school that supports veterans’ transition to civilian life by providing the necessary training and certifications that enables them to get well paying manufacturing jobs.
This episode is a masterclass on what it means to go all in. Hernan shares how he turned his vision into a reality by selling everything he owned to start Workshops for Warriors and what he needed to do to turn his vision into a reality.
Here are three takeaways from our conversation:
- Burn your ships. Hernán spoke with me about feeling inspired by his namesake, Hernán Cortés, who was made infamous by burning his ships upon arriving to the new world. Hernán adopts this mindset when launching Workshops for Warriors (which he funded by selling everything he had) – going forward is the only option.
- Aggressively ignore the things that don’t matter. Hernán reminds us that if you’re not laser focused on your goal, you can mistakenly divert your energy to actions that won’t impact your mission.
- Run towards the fight. Borrowed from the Marine Corps, Hernán recognizes that while terrifying, running toward the fight is how we move from “Someone should do something” to “I’m going to do something.”
This week’s Mojo Move is to Visualize your Mojo Motive.
So start this week by visualizing what will make this a great week for you. What are your must haves, who will you spend your time with, and equally important, what things or people will you avoid as they will distract you or zap your energy from what matters most to you.
In my experience working with Fortune 500 Leaders, many individuals or teams have a very clear vision, like Hernan, of what they’d like to accomplish, but find themselves stuck or distracted when it comes to execution – this is why I developed the Activate your Mojo VISION Program.
If you’re interested in sparking a similar relentlessness and forward momentum in your team, I would love for you to reach out about my Activate your Mojo VISION Program. Finding the right development opportunities that balance professional development and team connection are critically important and I would love to help. You can find learn more at i2Leadership.com
As always, Mojo Mondays Bootcamp is here to show you what’s possible in your life. I hope these notes and my weekly Mojo Move at the end of the interview help you find and activate your Mojo!
